A couple weeks ago a friend from San Diego contacted me about creating some baby shower items for a co-worker of hers. She wanted an owl theme with green, brown, & pink. Whoo doesn’t love owls? (get it whoo – whoo, like an owl…okay I’m a nerd!) Anyways. This baby shower was being held at a restaurant and they were told specifically nothing that created a mess of any kind could be used to decorate! So I needed to create some things for a table next to where they would be eating. And this is what we came up with.
First I found these amazingly glorious pictures frames at Hobby Lobby (all table frames always 50% off!). The frames were originally HOT PINK, and that wasn’t the right pink so I sprayed them light pink. (prime first people!) They turned out great! Then I created some subway art and a owl print for the frames to match the theme. I seriously love these frames, I want to buy some for me!
I still needed something to go with the frames that my friend Lexy could take home on the plane with her as a carry on, so I decided to make these hurricane inspired vases / candle holders. They turned out so cute. And she will just be filling the small hurrican with some green lentils and a candle, and the taller hurricane vase will hold flowers on the table.
These vases are so incredibly easy to make I’d thought I would share them with you. And cheap, did I mention cheap, no…well they are cheap-o! But when your done they look like you spent more than $2 bucks on each one!
What You’ll Need:
* Glass candle stick holders from the dollar store
(found these at Dollar Tree)
* Glass hurricane style vases or any large candle holder/vase you like from the dollar store or Goodwill
* E6000 glue (amazing glue)
* Glitter (I use Martha Stewart glitter, that lady knows glitter!)
* Spay paint (your choice of color)
* Spray primer
* Clear gloss or satin spray paint to seal the glitter
* Modge Podge & paintbrush

Note: You do not have to glitter your candlestick holders if you don’t want to. These are pretty left alone for a more elegant look, or even just spray painted a color like white or black. Even silver and gold would be pretty. Especially with the holidays approaching. And I didn’t have time to hit the store before this morning with costume making all night last night, so I just included pictures of what products I used. Hopefully you get the idea. 🙂
Start with your glass candle stick holder. I primed it first with a quick coat, let it dry then I sprayed mine with a brown spray paint I had on hand. When you feel it’s coated well enough you can either begin to glitter it or leave it alone. If your glittering it, you’ll need your Modge Podge now.
Coat your candlestick holder with Modge Podge in small sections so it doesn’t dry before you can glitter it. Once you’ve put the Modge Podge on sprinkle your glitter on to the glue. (I found that if I dump my glitter into a small plastic bowl that I can hold the item over it makes less mess. I also use a small spoon to sprinkle the glitter with, it makes it faster and easier.)
Once the candlestick is completely covered (I didn’t do the underneath side) I let it dry on a piece of wax paper. Once it was dry I sprayed them with a coat of the clear spray paint to seal the glitter! (p.s. the glitter I used is Martha Stewarts Copper glitter, it looks a little pink though once put on…it was perfect for this project!)
Now take your E6000 glue and the hurricane style vase and place a ring of glue carefully around the top of the candlestick holder. Then place your vase on top (centered), and leave to dry. It should probably sit for at least 24 hrs to make sure the glue is curred. And that’s it!
These are perfect for so many things…everyday accents around the home, wedding centerpieces for the bride on a budget, Christmas, Thanksgiving! I know I’m definitely making some of these for Christmas this year. I just haven’t decided what color to do yet for the base! 🙂
