I Heart Tatas!

As many of you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I personally have seen too many of my family members struggle with this disease.  So for me this month is just another reminder of what I already know...Check those Boobies!  Check them, and check them often.
In my family cancer runs strong.  About 4 years ago I began regular mammograms per my request and the awesome ob/gyn I see yearly.  My biological Grandmother passed away at the age of 43 from her struggle with breast cancer, my Mom was 3 years old when she passed away.  And last year my 92 year old Grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She went through radiation and had the cancer removed.  She will be 93 this December and has made a full recovery.  God played a tremendous part in her healing.  My Aunt was also diagnosed with breast cancer last year around the same time as my Grandma and decided to have a radical double mastectomy and in fact just recently finished her breast reconstruction surgeries and is doing amazingly.

It's not just breast cancer in my family, it's cervical, thyroid, and Leukemia.  With so much cancer history in our family I pushed to start having the mammograms done at an early age.  It amazes me that now they are saying to not have them done on a regular basis until age 50!  Come on, are you kidding.  Look at how many friends and family members are under the age of 50 and being diagnosed with this disease!  All that discussion makes me so grateful that my insurance company hasn't once said no to my request.

I have enormous boobies (a curse in my opinion, and when I say enormous...I mean ENORMOUS) and they are incredibly difficult to do a self breast exam on.  The are lumpy and it's hard to tell what's not a fibroid.  So it gives me peace of mind to have the mammogram done yearly to just put my mind at ease.  I encourage all of you from the age of 20 if your reading this and your not currently doing regular self breast exams to get off your butt and take the five minutes it take to do one!  It could save your life.  Encourage your friends and family members to also do one.

I saw some great things on Pinterest in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, and I thought I would share them with you.  If you or anyone you know will be holding an awareness event for support or to raise funds these next few things would be great as inspiration or to incorporate.

Thanks you for this reminder. I too have lost loved ones from not only breast cancer but other forms of cancer as well...including my mom who passed away from ovarian cancer when she was only 50. <3
