Patriotic-Popsicle-Stick-GarlandHi friends.  Today I’m thrilled to be a part of another amazing hop, Three Cheers for the Red-White-and-Blue!  110 top bloggers sharing all their amazing patriotic ideas.  I’m sharing this super cute Patriotic Popsicle Stick Garland.  Be sure to check out all the fun ideas from the rest of the group below.

Three-Cheers-for-the-Red-White-and-Blue-final-logo-2This Patriotic Popsicle Stick Garland is such an easy project, and it’s perfect for the upcoming Summer holidays or any patriotic holiday throughout the year.

Supplies:

–  DecoArt Americana acrylic paint (red, white, blue)
–  Foam brush
–  Small detail paint brush
–  Popsicle sticks
–  Glue gun
–  Jute twine
–  Painters tape

patriotic-popsicle-stick-garlandWe have a zillion popsicle sticks in our house, the boys love building with them.  I thought the garland would be so cute and mimic a mini planked wood garland if I used popsicle sticks.

I started by lining up 10 popsicle sticks on a flat surface.

Then hot glue a stick to the top and bottom of the popsicle sticks like shown below.  I then flipped each panel over and hot glued one more stick to the back across the top to create a lip for my jute twine later. (the extra popsicle stick will be the top of your panels)

I knew that I wanted to have some white to this garland but I wanted it to be subtle.  So I decided to give the mini panels a white wash finish.  To create your wash put about 1/4 – 1/2 a cup of water in a small bowl, then add about 1 – 2 TB of white acrylic paint and mix well.  Test on an extra popsicle stick to see if it needs more paint added or to be thinned with a little water.  You want the finish to be slightly translucent not opaque on the panels.

patriotic-popsicle-stick-garlandTape off the panels you want to be red & white striped, I just cut a length of painters tape in half to create 1/2″ strips of tape.

Paint the stripes red, when dry remove the tape.

For the blue star I just used my Cricut Explore to cut a quick start template and then traced it on to my mini panels.

Paint the stars blue.

patriotic-popsicle-stick-garlandWhen everything is dry you can hot glue jute twine across the back of your mini panels.  Place a bead of hot glue right that extra stick you put across the top of the back, glue the jute twine under it.
