American Flag Art

06/03/2013 3 Comments

Today I’m giving you a sneak peak at the American Flag Art I created for my summer mantle that I will be finishing this week.  As you know I just repainted my fireplace white and it’s the perfect backdrop now for anything.  This year I’m really loving neutrals, well gray in particular.  So for this years summer mantle I’m trying to keep with that neutral theme which is why I decided to paint my American Flag Art in gray & white.  I love how it’s simple and still patriotic and quite symbolic of the love we have for our country.

Want to make your own?  Here’s what you will need:

–  Large piece of wood {you can create a palette piece if you’d like}
–  Paint {I used left over primer for the white & a sample I had mixed of gray that was laying around}
–  Foam brushes
–  Masking tape or Painters tape
–  Ruler
–  Vinyl stencil for the stars
The first thing I did was to paint my wood board {by the way this is particle board} with my white primer.  Then I just measured out how wide I needed my stripes to be {and yes there is extra stripes because it was late when I decided to do this project}.  I used 2″ wide masking tape to tape off my stripes.  Then I cut a vinyl stencil that had 50 stars.  I removed the vinyl I didn’t need and kept only the stars, transferring them using clear contact paper on to my wood board.  I then painted my gray paint over everything.  Once it was dry I carefully peeled off the vinyl and the tape.  Because this is particle board some of the wood flecked off as I peeled everything off.  Which actually ends up looking kind of neat.  There are very small pieces of the wood color showing through all over, it’s hard to see in these pics…but it looks good.  I love how it turned out and I can’t wait to show you the rest of the mantle when it’s finished.
